Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS)
Advanced and early gynecologic conditions, treated through the smallest possible incisions — sometimes none at all.
Laparoscopic, robotic, vaginal, and hysteroscopic surgery are all forms of MIGS — surgeries performed through small incisions, sometimes with no incision at all. Dr. Assia Stepanian is an internationally recognized authority in MIGS and founder of SurgeryU, the world's first and largest professional platform for web-based education in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.
Conditions treated by MIGS include uterine fibroids (including advanced cases), pelvic pain, endometriosis, pelvic floor surgery, urinary incontinence, ovarian masses and adhesions, among others. Multiple forms of genital anomalies can be treated laparoscopically and hysteroscopically.
The benefits of a minimally invasive approach
The main benefit of MIGS is superior visualization of the targeted tissue and outstanding performance through small incisions. Precision increases and tissue handling becomes more gentle, with less manipulation and less blood loss — in most MIGS surgeries blood loss is less than 25–50 ml.
Benefits include a decreased risk of perioperative infection and an early return to normal activities; some people return to work in only one or two weeks. There is hardly any need for narcotic medications post-operatively — Motrin is used as the primary pain medication. The vaginal approach has no abdominal incisions whatsoever.
"Hysteroscopy is our inspectional and operative window into the woman's uterus. It allows for early intervention in the office setting or surgical suites and often prevents the need for more invasive uterine surgery."
